When Luke wrote about John the Baptist, he said something that I haven’t really taken time to meditate on at all but I think John may have been the only Jewish priest that the bible mentions as being filled with the Holy Spirit of God before he was born.
Luke 1:13-15
But the angel said to him: “Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to call him John. He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth, for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He is never to take wine or other fermented drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even before he is born.”
John The Baptist
Since John’s father Zechariah (Jesus’ uncle) was a Jewish priest, so was John.
Imagine knowing at a very early age that you were the one priest that Isaiah the prophet wrote about who would prepare the way for the Messiah and that the long awaited Messiah was your cousin!
Mathew 3:1-3
In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, and saying, “Repent ye, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah, saying, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness. Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make His paths straight.”
Later Mathew writes that John said…
Mathew 3:11-12 “I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me comes one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor, gathering his wheat into the barn and burning up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”
Then Jesus, the person John is talking about Who will baptize not with water but with the Holy Spirit and fire, this Jesus comes to John’s baptism service and tells John to baptize Him!
Mathew 3:13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. 14 But John tried to deter him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?”
15 Jesus replied, “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.” Then John consented.
After that, God the Father reveals that Jesus is His Son.
Mathew 3:16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”
Isaiah 40: 3-5
A voice of one calling:
“In the wilderness prepare
the way for the Lord;
make straight in the desert
a highway for our God.
4 Every valley shall be raised up,
every mountain and hill made low;
the rough ground shall become level,
the rugged places a plain.
5 And the glory of the Lord will be revealed,
and all people will see it together…”
